How to Prepare for a Migraine

Migraine patients know exactly what it feels like when an attack is brewing. I can often assess a situation I’m in, where my migraine monsters are going to be a problem, sometimes long before I start feeling any symptoms. For example, the other day, I was heading home from the city on the train and the sun was beaming brightly into the car. No matter where I went, I could tell that my eyes were taking in too much light, but I was also helpless because I had no place to go. Just as expected, by the time I got home, I started to feel that pulse that migraine sufferers are afraid of.

What can migraine patients do to prepare for triggers they may experience on a day-to-day basis? I’ve found that there are preventative steps that you incorporate into your life, especially if you’re sensitive to certain attack stimuli like me. Ideally, you can prepare to manage upcoming migraine attacks without altering your personal time, or your daily responsibilities. Here are some quick tips that have made a huge difference in my life. 

 

Daily Must-Haves

Sunglasses / Hat: As I previously mentioned, light is often a trigger of my migraine attacks. Being prepared to block out light if you find yourself overwhelmed is an easy way to minimize attacks triggered by brightness.

Water: Dehydration can come on hard and fast if I don’t drink enough water in the day. I’ve found that not being well hydrated is tied to an increase in my attacks, so I make a point to be drinking water whenever I have an opportunity.

Snack: Like water, when I skip meals or snacks I’m asking for a migraine attack to strike. Keeping my energy up and avoiding hunger makes a big difference in my ability to minimize the frequency of my attacks

Medication: I never leave home without my medication. It’s important for me to have fast-acting treatment options on hand when I feel like a migraine monster is heading my way. It’s all about quickly getting back to what I love to do as soon as possible.

Why It’s Important

We need to be prepared for the potential of an upcoming migraine throughout the day. It’s just as important for me to get through my workday as it is for me to get through my child’s music concert. These moments truly matter. I don’t want to miss a second of my babies’ lives, and migraines are the last reason why it should happen.
